Garment dyeing is a technique that can be applied to various natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and wool. It is a highly versatile method with ancient roots; in Japan, it has been known as shibori since the 8th century. Unlike pre-colored fabrics that are later sewn, this process begins with a “ready-to-dye” fabric, usually in a neutral shade like white or beige. Once the garment is fully assembled, it undergoes specialized dyeing techniques. Solid colors can be applied, specific areas can be decolorized, or cold dyes with particular enzymes can be used to create striking, lived-in effects such as degradé or maltinto. The term “over-dyed garment” refers to pieces initially made with colored or printed fabric and then dyed again, producing a blend of hues and shades. When executed with expertise, this technique results in a unique, character-rich garment with a beautifully worn aesthetic.
